Art:21 | James Turrell
James Turrell's work involves explorations in light and space that speak to viewers without words, impacting the eye, body, and mind with the force of a spiritual awakening. Situated near the Grand Canyon and Arizona's Painted Desert is Roden Crater, an extinct volcano the artist has been transforming into a celestial observatory for the past thirty years. Working with cosmological phenomena that have interested man since the dawn of civilization, Turrell's crater brings the heavens down to earth, linking the actions of people with the movements of planets and distant galaxies.
James Turrell is featured in the Season 1 episode "Spirituality" of the Art21 series "Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century".

"Meeting" by James Turrell
This is an incredible site-specific installation at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, NY. "Meeting" by James Turrell consists of a single room lined with a wooden bench, white walls tinged with orange-toned lighting, and an enormous cut-out in the ceiling, revealing a gorgeous swatch of sky. I love it -- you're indoors but not entirely, just gazing up at the sky. It kind of feels like you're in the waiting room for heaven.
James Turrell "Skyspace"
This is one of the American sculptor James Turrell's "skyspace" installations, this one at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco. It's a hemispherical room with a circular oculus in the center of the ceiling through which only the sky may be seen. Like all of Turrell's work, it deals with the perception of light, space and time. The video was shot at about 5pm, as the fog was returning to Golden Gate Park. The tiny objects occasionally floating in through the oculus are cherry blossom petals from nearby trees.
